Stories Instead of Gifts: PatientsForce and TFRD Invite Companies into the Rare Disease Community

Author | PatientsForce\n\nA corporate Mid-Autumn budget usually turns into mooncakes and gift boxes. PatientsForce spends it on something else: a hands-on class taught by people living with rare diseases.\n\nOn 23 September 2026, Taiwan Shin Sheng Daily News reported on the results of the "Smiling Mid-Autumn Ambassadors" corporate programme run by PatientsForce together with the Taiwan Foundation for Rare Disorders (TFRD). Since it launched in November 2025, nine companies across industries have taken part and more than 1,000 employees have heard a rare disease patient tell their own story and completed an artisan workshop.\n\n## Why did "Smiling Mid-Autumn" move from gifts to stories?\n\nBecause a gift box ends when it is opened, and a story does not. PatientsForce has run its "give meaning, not gifts" programme since 2014, and in recent years has handed the podium to patients themselves.\n\nBehind that shift is a reassessment of what corporate giving actually achieves. A one-off donation closes an immediate resource gap, but rarely changes how employees picture illness and disability. When the instructor is the patient, understanding comes from contact rather than explanation.\n\n## Where the resources have gone over more than a decade\n\nSince 2014, "Smiling Mid-Autumn" has directed resources to rural healthcare, education grants, charitable trusts and disadvantaged families. This year the programme centres on the patient's own voice, inviting life ambassadors living with conditions such as Armstrong syndrome and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to teach, using immersive hands-on sessions to deepen employees' understanding of rare diseases and inclusion.\n\nFor the patients, this is more than a talk. Standing in front of a room and teaching a craft is itself an act of participation. Employment options for people with rare diseases are limited, and the roles of instructor and artisan open another path.\n\n## What changes when employees visit a rare disease home?\n\nDistance changes. A one-day visit lets HR and CSR teams see day-to-day caregiving for themselves, so that back at the office inclusion stops being a word in a policy document.\n\nFrom the second half of 2026 the programme expands in three directions:\n\n- Life ambassador talks held inside companies, led by patients themselves.\n\n- A one-day experience at the Guanxi Rare Disease Home, designed for corporate HR and CSR teams.\n\n- Rare Artisan Month in November, with a limited-edition handmade bag project produced with rare disease artisans.\n\nTFRD Chief Executive Officer Chen Kuan-ju said in the report that she is grateful to PatientsForce and its partner companies for acting as a bridge between philanthropy and corporate social responsibility, helping more corporate partners get to know rare disease families and strengthening understanding of diversity and inclusion.\n\n## Why is a patient support company doing this?\n\nBecause both sides address the same problem. The daily work of PatientsForce is making sure patients can obtain their medicine and stay in treatment; a society that understands little about their condition makes the same journey harder. Access solves the resource side, inclusion solves the environment.\n\nPatientsForce Chairman Chang Hsiang-hsin noted in the report that "Smiling Mid-Autumn" is not merely a seasonal event, but long-term, systematic corporate collaboration that keeps rare disease issues visible.\n\n## How can a company take part?\n\nCompanies can apply through the PatientsForce website or the TFRD website, then choose between in-house talks, the one-day rare disease home experience, or the November Rare Artisan Month handmade bag project.\n\n### Source\n\nAdapted from a report in Taiwan Shin Sheng Daily News, 23 September 2026, by reporter Chung Pei-fang.\n\nOriginal article: https://tw.news.yahoo.com/%E5%BB%B6%E7%BA%8C-%E5%BE%AE%E7%AC%91%E4%B8%AD%E7%A7%8B-%E6%BA%AB%E6%9A%96-patientsforce%E6%94%9C%E6%89%8B%E7%BD%95%E5%9F%BA%E9%82%80%E4%BC%81%E6%A5%AD%E8%B5%B0%E5%85%A5%E7%BD%95%E8%A6%8B%E5%AE%B6%E5%9C%92-091919372.html
